The ruins of an old mosque still exist in 'Meera Saddo', the locality. The mosque is believed to be built in 13th Century. This belief makes it the oldest mosque in Amroha. It is also believed that a servant of the mosque invented a practice of sacrificing goats and
cocks for the fulfillment of prayers. The
prank, somehow, started working and this practice became popular which changed the nature of this place of worship.
People from all faiths began to crowd and a chain was hanged for
demented patients in the central dome. At present its a disputed site as Muslims and Hindus both claim its link to their religions. The ruins are also believed to be haunted. There is also an interesting story about the curse of Djinns at that place.
The Story:
Once upon a time, there lived a learned man called Meer(invented name). He was a servant of the mosque and lived in its compound. One day he overpowered a djinn. Zayn Khan, the djinn, was a good djinn who always stayed away from doing wrong to others. Zayn was very powerful and was able to travel thousands of kilometers within seconds. When his master realized Zayn's powers, he decided to use him for his selfish purposes. He asked Zayn to kidnap a princess. Zayn warned him that its wrong and doing such things is going to harm him. But Meer ignored his warning and forced Zayn to fulfill his orders. Still, Zayn put a condition before abiding to his master's order. He told him, "I will bring the princess to your room as per your order, however, when you come out of that room you have to be in pure state (paak)". To which his master agreed. Meer was a smart fellow. He arranged a big clay pot and filled it with water. He used that water for taking a bath(ghusl) before coming out of that room.

This way it continued and the princess was kidnapped several times. The princess told this to Najoomis at her place but they were all helpless in front of Zayn's powers. One aalim(a learned man) asked her about the place where she was taken. She had no clue about the place. However, she told them about the room and the big clay pot there. The aalim advised her to break the pot if next time anything similar happens.

After few days, she was again kidnapped and taken to that room. This time she broke the pot which drained all its water. This made Meer shout out of fear but it was of no use. The water was already gone. Meer knew that now Zayn is not going to leave him. He made a plan.

He got out of that room. Zayn was there, waiting for him. Zayn told him that his days are over. He requested Zayn to let him choose how he wanted to die.

Zayn agreed and asked him where and how he wanted to taste death. Meer, being a smart fellow, was aware of Djinns' behaviour, asked him "Please take me to a dry place or mountain". He knew Djinns never obey when they are out of your control. Even when they do they have trickster nature and they twist events for the worse. This way, he believed, Zayn will drown him into a water body or some ocean. And he thought as soon as Zayn will drop him into water, he will again be pure(by doing ghusl) and will be in a position to control Zayn.

However, Zayn understood his plan. He told Meer that although Djinns always do the opposite, he will fulfill his last request. This way Zayn punished Meer by taking him to an unknown place.

Nobody knows if there is any truth behind this story but the place remains haunted. It is believed to be occupied by Djinns.

With rise in population and urbanization, the green cover in and around Amroha, is decreasing really fast. In city's modern homes there is no space left for trees. Unlike the older generation, young Amrohvis do not have any childhood memories of climbing, swinging and playing under a tree.
This post is about some of the those lucky old trees which are still alive maybe because they are famous and are in use as a landmark.

1. Anar Wali Zyarat
The tree which lives by the blessing of the sufi saint who was buried next to it. Even the tomb is known as "Anar Wali Zyarat". The pomegranate tree goes unnoticed by hundreds of people who pass by it through out the day. Some occasional passers-by shook their head or recite a prayer in respect of the saint who is resting next to it. This place is located midway between Bazar Shafat Pota and Chauraha Kot.

2. Gullu Neem
This Neem tree is very large and is a very popular landmark. Even the whole locality is known by it. The tree provides shelter to many rickshaw-walas who park their rickshaw in its shadow. Even some shops have came up around the tree's base. This tree is located near Amroha Tehsil.

3. Imli Hakeem
A hakeem lived near this Imli tree. He became famous as the hakeem who lives near the Imli(Tamarind tree). The tree still exists so is the Hakim's Dawakhana.

4. Bad Chahgauri
This tree stands tall in Mohalla Chahgauri. Not as famous as others however it is a local landmark. There is a big Chabutra(dais) around this tree where children play. Banyan tree is known as "Bad ka Ped" in Urdu.

5. The Tree at Dargah Shahwilayat
A legendary tree which is believed to have grown by the braid of Daadi Bakhoee, the sister of Dada Shahwilayat. The tree's branches grew entangled like a braid of a women. Although it is believed to be existing even today, its difficult to locate it. Daadi Bakhoee still remains one of the few women sufis in Amroha.

In 1980s, the time when Amrohvis were yet to hear about Computers and Mobile phones were beyond imagination. There were limited medical facilities. The time when mental disorders were related to something mystical and supernatural. And people who suffered from them were considered possessed and became victim of notorious sluggards. They were teased regularly and their reactions became a source of entertainment. They were known by strange names. Some of them were violent, some very funny. Five of them were:

Mauli: He was a 6 feet high man. He used to randomly shout "Mauli aa gaye". He is believed to have lost mental balance after sudden death of his elder sister. He carried eating stuff with him all the time and used to roam around the whole city. He called every women in burqa,"Anno", in memory of his sister. He used to gift women the eatables he carried. Women used to get really scared, although he never harmed anyone. And not just eatables, he is also believed to have gifted many valuable things to random women.

Joda Garam: He was a man who carried a big stick with him all the time. He was violent and people were really scared of him. He used to run after boys who teased him by calling "Joda".

447 : This man was famously known by the number 447(Chaar-Sau-Saytalis). He had very strange and violent behavior. The strange thing is that he never harmed the person who slapped him. A slap used to work as a trigger which activated the anger in him. He used to keep walking angrily in search of target. As soon as he encountered the next person on the road. He used to get closer and slap the person really hard. Everybody knew that he is mentally disturbed, by his appearance, so people just walked away after shouting at him. Notorious boys of localities used him on many people.

Pakodi: A women who used to roam around the whole city and abused everyone who teased her. She was even spotted during summer afternoons, walking around with no destination in her mind. It is believed that she was lonely and even enjoyed the teasing. She used to shout "Sab mar gaye kya..!!", on finding that there is no one to tease her.

Ghaseeta: This person also had a very strange behavior. He used to stare at the Sun for minutes(I was told hours) continuously without blinking his eyes. Another characteristic was his love for lighting matchsticks. He was harmless but asked shopkeepers for matchbox. He used to just light the matchsticks and enjoyed it. Some superstitious shopkeepers near bazaar Katra even considered him lucky and happily gave him matchboxes to burn.

It all sounds strange however many old people have encountered at least one of them.

As the name suggests, this locality have an Afghanistan connection. Few hundred years ago, in Mughal period, some afghans migrated to Amroha and started living at this place. So this locality is called Afghanan. The current generation of the people living here do not speak pashto. But as obvious, they are pathans so all of them add "Khan" to their name. Most of the families own acres of farms and orchards. They give their land to others on contract who take care and do farming on it.

Many young people from this locality are in UAE and other countries for employment. Men are fair, muscular and tall.

Most of the women are homemakers. They are tall, beautiful and attractive. Now a days people in this locality are more concerned about education of their children than ever.

Afghanan is also home to another community called "Khumrey". They have significant population in this locality. They used to work for rich pathans. They are very hard working. Now they work as farmers.

There is a big graveyard on one side of this locality. There also used to be ruins of a maqbara. Large portion of the ruins is now being used as a playground by local children.

According to Gabbar, whenever a child wept in a far away
village his mother used to say “Chup hoja warna Gabbar aa jayega”.

This scary image by: akira_kev

I think parents in Amroha got highly inspired with this
dialogue and they decided to implement it on their children. It was
required for those naughty and mischievous children who refuse to stay
inside even during foggy winter evenings and heat stroking summer afternoons. So parents of every locality invented some characters to scare their children and
make them a little obedient. Here is a list comprising some of them and their
characteristics:

Chaukidaar: Children who refuse to go to bed are scared with chaukidaar. They are told if they don't sleep early chaukidaar will take them with him. And
actually a chaukidaar used to arrive shouting " Jaagte raho", every
night after 11 o'clock. It is a 100% working trick. Poor children don't even know
"chaukidaar" is an Urdu word for night watchmen.

Sai Baba: This name is given to beggars who sing and
carry big bag for keeping food items they receive. Children are made to believe
that if he find you playing outside your home during afternoon he will kidnap
you. And he carries children in his bag, those who disobey their parents.

Mauli Atta: A mentally disturbed person in a locality is named mauli. And there are many in the city. Their look and attitude in itself is enough to scare any child and parents make sure to use him on their children.

Apart from these local characters children are often scared with global ghosts too. Kala Djinn, Chhalawa, Aatma are some of them.

All these scary characters played an important role in everybody's childhood in Amroha. I know there were many others. Do you remember any of them??

I remember, since childhood whenever I
suffered from a disease, the first thing every doctor/hakeem advised to be totally abstinent from
rice. Although, due to my mother’s fondness, lunch for me only means
rice. I have had best seasonal Khichdis, Tahiri, Pulao, Biryani and Dal-Chawal

The point is, rice dishes are not considered a complete
meal(You may not agree completely). Yes, I know how much everyone is fond of
Biryani. But if you are invited for dinner and served only Biryani, its not
considered good hospitality. It is believed eating rice in dinner makes you
vulnerable to cough and cold. And also eating rice when you are sick is a completely
no-no.

I used to blame Hakeems for this earlier. Recently, even a
doctor advised my mother not to eat rice. She argued with the argument I have
told her earlier that whole South India, Eastern India, Bihar, Eastern UP,
and Kashmir eat rice for lunch and dinner both.
The doctor replied, “It is a regional thing, they live on rice but if you start
doing like them you will fall sick”. Hearing this I lost faith in Medical
Sciences. :)

I think it is because we never combine rice with our
heavenly gravies. Rice is always cooked as a separate single dish(e.g Khichdi,

cooked meat and vegetable(Dal is an exception). We need rotis or freshly baked
naan with every gravy.

On the evening of 29th Ramzaan, the Moon was sighted in India this year. And this was confirmed by the loud sirens. That was the last time sirens came to life this year. Eid ul Fitr was celebrated the next day. People said Alvida to Ramzaan. That was the end of one month long fasting and the additional taraweeh prayer.

Markets were most crowded that evening. All shops remained open till 2 a.m. Women went out to finish their month long shopping. All Kurta shops were crowded with men. Tailors were trying hard to wrap up their work. Everyone was in hurry. Girls were busy buying their accessories and getting henna applied over their hands.

All aunties were busy preparing various dishes including Sheer. Everyone expects a lot of guests on Eid. The weather was very pleasant with clouds and cool breeze flowing. Most importantly there was un-interrupted electricity supply(if you were in Amroha, plz replace 'un-interrupted electricity supply' with 'fewer power cuts').
In the morning all roads leading to Eidgah were overcrowded. Thousands of men were moving towards Eidgah for Eid prayer wearing their new Kurta-Payjama. Due to rain that happened early morning all roads were wet. People were moving slowly saving their clothes from mud. After prayer and dua it again started raining and people reached home completely soaked in water. Rest whole day was spent visiting relatives and friends. And enjoying all the delicious stuff.

After facing two long months of summer.

In the middle of June, relief arrives in the form of clouds. The first batch is scattered and white. But they keep coming in and filling the Amroha sky. They rise from where sky meets earth. Slowly dense grey clouds replace everything white in the Sky. They bring with them cool breeze which is followed by droplets, so tiny that you cannot see them. But their moisture can be felt. This brings a new life to almost dead yellow leaves. All birds rise from their nests and form circles in the sky. Children come to their roof tops with their kites. Kabootarbaaz starts making strange sounds with more passion.

And within an hour the wind catches speed. Now, the kites cannot remain attached to their string. They become uncontrollable and detach themselves and decide to fly with the wind. The southern end of the sky starts turning dark. Rain bearing dark clouds called ghata are now visible. Slowly, they takes over everything. There are no clouds anymore but just one single black sky. This is the point at which it seems that the Sun has surrendered. Everyone starts looking in the sky and while waiting for the moment when everything comes to halt. Even the birds start looking for shelter. In a few moments of animation the sky falls. It comes down to earth in the form of water. These round big drops fall on earth and wash everything. The dust which got accumulated on the leaves and all signs of Loo, that have blown over the last few months, will be washed. Within couple of hours everything is new, fresh and green.

This marks the beginning of the Season of Mangoes. Market is full of these yellowish-green and juicy fruits. Jamuns seem to have absorbed the dark color of sky and accompany mangoes in their season.

Melons and Water Melons loose their sweetness. Even Litchi's time is over. Now, the King of Fruits rules the market.

On the birthday of Prophet Mohammad (SAW). Muslim Committee of Amroha organizes "Jaloos", a procession. Thousands of Amrohvis participate in Jaloos after Zuhar Namaz(Noon Prayer). It begins from Jama Masjid, Amroha. The procession moves along Bazar Naubat Khana , Tehseel, Bada Bazar, Guzri, Bazar Shafat Pota, Chahgauri, Maja Pota and Chilla to finally reach Chauraha Kot. People carry green decorated flags embroidered with the name "Muhammad" and "Allah".
One of the popular slogan shouted in Jaloos is:

"Islam ki taleem sab insan". "Bhai-Bhai".

I wonder if people really understand this. Or we simply shout it and forget it as soon as the festivity is over.

You can find very few people on roads after 10 P.M during dark winter nights in Amroha. Due to dense fog the visibility reduces to few meters. All Amrohvis decide to get into their homes. Even Chauraha Kot and Chauraha Naubat Khana are vacant. Groundnut sellers stick to the fire they use to keep the nuts warm. People can be found burning wooden logs as they discuss politics or cricket in early hours of night. Dogs decide to give up their possession of streets during night.

Shivering cold and dense fog is annoying. Its delicious food which excites everyone about winters. Gajak, Rewri, Til ke Laddu, Gajar ka Halwa, Egg Halwa, Steaming hot Gulab Jamuns are season's special. Even at home the menu becomes more delicious. As if its just the season to eat and sleep. Matar Pulao, Khichdi, Fish, Ras ki Kheer, Shakarkandi ki Kheer and many more delicious stuff become part of the menu. This is also the season of papaya, guava, oranges and grapes.

With lesser power cuts and mosquitoes. Amrohvis seem to enjoy winters.

After Namaz-e-Juma politicians gather in front of Jama Masjid's main gate and their supporters don't allow namazis to move out of masjid freely. Every Friday a new but familiar face is there with a wide smile and you know that he is here to announce his candidature for next elections. On top of that there are fruit sellers who gather their carts full of fruits in a line in front of gate and shout crazily to attract namazis as they indulge into shopping after namaz. Among all this chaos the most sought after thing after namaz is fish. Like fruit sellers, fishwalas also setup their shops at the other Jama Masjid gate. They sit there with their big butcher knives, ready to cut fishes into pieces as soon as the bargaining about the price ends.

Actually, due to unavailability of good beef on Friday. Most Amrohvis decide to cook fish on this day. And buying fish after namaz is very convenient and is becoming a routine for many people. No one wants to visit that filthy Fish Market at Chauraha Kot when fresh fish is available at Jama Masjid.

If you want to buy the type of fish you want. Reach there just after namaz. Because there are lot of customers and the price is also high. Make sure you bargain. If you decide to go a little later it depends on luck whether you will be able to find the fish you want. However the price at that time would be reasonable and even the crowd would be less.

Mangoes in Amroha.

Amroha, my hometown, is known for its production of mangoes. Amroha is one of the largest mango producing districts of western UP. Even the name Amroha is a combination of two words 'Aam' and 'Rohu'. 'Aam' means 'mango' in English and 'Rohu' is a type of fish. Although I cannot differentiate 'Rohu' from other varieties of fishes but now I can recognize many varieties of mangoes. Even I wondered when Amroha is not on a sea coast neither it is on a bank of a river how come this place is known for fishes. Later I learned that the city was having many ponds on its outskirts where people used to catch those fishes. But now many of those ponds are dry and many were filled up for urbanization.

This summer, after years, I got a chance to spend my holidays in Amroha. The city is on a fast track of development. There are better roads, many new colleges and schools, a flyover and many new showrooms. Its the time of the year when the trees all around Amroha are full of mangoes. But no one can dare to enter any of the Mango orchards without permission because they are secured. As soon as u try to touch a fruit someone shouts from a mile away. And not just that ...there are trained dogs who provide security to these orchards. Actually these orchards, full of mangoes, attract everyone including robbers.

Being from Amroha the love for mangoes comes naturally to me. Even my Grandfather owned a mango orchard. But it wasn't of any profit and needed a lot of care so he sold it later. This season I had tasted many different varieties of mangoes. Amroha produce many of the varieties and many other come from nearby villages and districts in our market. One type of mango may differ from others in color, taste, smell, size, price or looks.

So in Amroha its not just about eating this delicious pulpy fruit. But about tasting all of its varieties also called “Qismaat”. Finding different varieties is not easy even in Amroha. There are only six-seven varieties like Bombai, langda, chausa etc. which are popular and produced in huge quantity. Rest of the other varieties's production is very low and most of it is exported, self consumed or gifted to relatives by the orchard owners. Even to buy some of the quantity that comes in the market u have to make an advance request and constant queries with fruit sellers. And also need to recognize what u are being sold because u can be easily fooled by the fruit seller.

But the effort is worth doing for “The King of Fruits”..!!

In Amroha humans are the most commonly seen species during the day. They exist in good numbers. Most of them believe in God and follow his orders. God, they believe, is some form of external power which asks them to do all good things and spend life in a particular way. Now a days, they have started following only the orders they find easy and suitable. Which must have annoyed God and now he had reduced their brain power. So, humans have started creating problems and fighting among themselves.

After humans, other most common living thing is a mosquito. Mosquitoes are more than thousand times smaller than humans but even humans are scared of them. They fly into human colonies, bite them and sometimes even kill them. Humans can easily control them but he himself creates suitable environment for their reproduction. Mosquitoes are also believed to be a punishment of their God. Humans are able to create weapons for destroying fellow humans but cannot fight with mosquitoes.

During night most commonly seen species are dogs. They become the king of streets during night. They bark on everyone except robbers. Never run on seeing a dog.

Ghosts can also be found during night in Amroha. They are believed to live at certain places across the city. They come out to haunt people, generally, when they are out in night alone. They are believed to be carrying a candle on their head or in hand. They prefer white or black clothes. Ghosts do not work in groups. They are never seen accompanied with a friend. Always run on seeing a ghost.

Another dangerous species is a biker. They are comparatively newer than others. Basically this species consist of a human riding a fast moving machine called bike. They do not let you walk on road peacefully. They come honking their loud horn and disappear before you try to recognize them. They are sometimes in such a speed as if somewhere countdown has been initiated and the world is going to end if they do not reach their destination in a few seconds. When you hear them approaching just stop moving. Stick to a wall, close your eyes and recite Kalma. If you are in a congested street of Amroha this is the best thing to do.

Other earth species are also here and they behave quiet normally.

is held there. He was given the name “Shah Abban” by his followers which
means “Father of Kings(Sufis)" . He is the ancestor of Amroha's RIZVIS.
It’s a famous landmark and can also be considered a sub-locality.
‘Khari’ means ‘Saline’ and ‘Kuan’ is ‘a well’ in Hindi. This
landmark used to be a well with saline water . It was filled later and
now a transformer is placed on its top. This sub-locality is home to
Amroha’s JAFRI community.
